Addmotor M-81 Step-Through Electric Cargo Bike Review
Addmotor’s journey began in 2011 in El Monte California with a desire to design and manufacture quality electric bikes that everyone could have access to. Over the years Addmotor spent time tweaking, perfecting, and designing electric trikes, and electric bikes that fit the many needs of its customers.
Addmotor focuses on top-quality products and an insistence on the highest quality electric trikes, bikes, and accessories. With a professional R&D team, Addmotor is constantly working on new innovations which provide an eco-friendly and fun way to get around that is safe and comfortable thanks to the first UL-verified battery and ergonomic design.
Addmotor’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges and opportunities. In September 2022, Addmotor opened its Florida warehouse and showroom, in March 2022, Addmotor gets the world’s first 48V 20Ah UL-Verified Battery that passed the UL safety certifications based on industry-wide standards in Canada and the US.
In 2021 the newly introduced EB-2.0 system with an upgraded 20Ah battery was successfully applied to the first-ever Citypro e-bike models. It gives these bikes the longest-riding range of up to 125 miles.
In 2021, Addmotor opens its California warehouse and showroom, in 2018 Addmotor released its line of electric tricycles, and in 2017 Addmotor launches the world’s first electric trike with a semi-recumbent backrest.
So, as you can see, Addmotor is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to make getting around on electric bikes more enjoyable, safe, and efficient as possible and they show no sign of slowing down any time soon.
One of Addmotor’s bestselling electric bikes is their Garootan M-81 Electric Cargo Bike. An electric cargo bike, or cargo e-bike is a combination of a traditional cargo bike and an electric bike. An electric cargo bike is a larger gear-hauling cargo bike powered by an electric motor which means it has no limitations because of fossil fuel availability and can be pedaled up hills more easily.
The most common type of cargo e-bike is the rear loader design. They are ideal for different types of deliveries, you can transport your kids and groceries, carry farm tools, and just about anything you can think of.
The M-81 is a step-through design that allows for easy on-off access which is ideal for shorter riders and people with mobility issues. The M-81 is equipped with the EB 2.0 750W Rear Gear Motor that comes with the newer dedicated inner ring that is more heat resistant, quieter, and has better heat dissipation which improves the motor’s life span.
Batteries on these bikes are a big deal and Addmotors latest high-capacity 21700 battery cell is as big a deal as it gets. Not only does this battery have a larger cell capacity ( reaching 5000mha ), but it also has a higher maximum discharge current ( reaching 3C ).
The M-81 features the EB 2.0 25A Controller. The Addmotor controller was upgraded to a chip-type controller which simplifies various circuit systems and reduces space on the board. This bike also comes with the EB 2.0 Light System. Addmotor developed this advanced electrical system for their electric bikes and trikes. The rear taillight offers multifunction safety in the form of a right and left turn signal function, brake light, danger light, and flashing red light.
The Multi-Function LCD Display on this bike is also part of the EB 2.0 System. The left and right turn signals on this display really do give an added feeling of safety on any trip you take.
The M-81 uses Kenda 20″ x 4.0″ Fat Tires with reflective strips. These newly designed puncture-resistant tires have big convex glue tread patterns that help avoid the dreaded flat tire scenario when you are on a trip. The low-resistance tire design makes it easy to ride on all types of terrain.
Another feature unique to this bike is the front foot platform. This front platform pedal can be used as a moped or a place to store things.
The adjustable U-Style Curved handlebar lets you find the ideal angle allowing a more upright postion making for a much more comfortable ride. This bike’s frame is a rugged reinforced integrated design that is built using 6061 aluminum and features hidden internal wiring.
And what would an electric cargo bike be without a rear cargo rack? Fortunately, Addmotor’s new integrated rear rack design will help you carry more cargo and also gives the bike a new modern look.

All-in-all, the Addmotor M-81 is a great choice for anyone that is looking for a capable electric cargo bike but in a slightly smaller package, but by no means is this bike small it is still fairly large but not as large compared to many electric cargo/utility bikes on the market.
The M-81 is very versatile, it comes with many high-quality components and the comfortable step-through design makes it ideal for easy on-off access which is great if you are using the bike to make deliveries or are someone with mobility issues. This bike is also no slouch when it comes to power and torque, the 750W rear hub motor was designed to get that big max payload wherever you want it to go.
Another nice feature of this bike is the fact that the rear cargo rack is actually welded right to the frame making it incredibly sturdy. The Brakes are another nice feature of this bike, they are Addmotor branded hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors on both the front and rear that provide really strong braking, this is something you are going to need especially if you decide to load this bike up to its max payload weight of 350 lbs. The braking system also features motor inhibitors that instantly cut power to the motor when the brakes are applied.
The front forks provide 100mm of travel which is enough to smooth out any rough terrain you might encounter and there is a pre-load adjustment and lockout. The front wheel is a quick-release wheel which is great in case you need to change out the wheel in the event of a flat and really reduces the amount of time that can take. Some people, however, are not big fans of quick-release wheels for the simple fact that you really do have to pay attention and make sure everything is put back the right way and is secure and safe.
Right out of the box, the Addmotor M-81 Electric Cargo Bike has everything you need in a good-quality, well-built electric cargo bike that has an impressive range, and tons of power. And this electric cargo bike isn’t just for packing lots of cargo around, this bike is also great for commuting to work, taking the kids out for a cruise around the neighborhood, or doing deliveries if that’s what you need it to do.
